Many people think executive presence is something you put on.
A more polished version of yourself. A more corporate voice. Better slides. More confidence. More charisma.
I do not think that is what executive presence is at all.
Some of the most impressive senior leaders I have worked with are often the least showy in the room. They are not trying to sound important. They are not managing impressions. They are not performing leadership.
They are aligned.
Their thinking, voice, delivery and authority all feel connected. You know where you stand with them.
This becomes particularly important in board presentations, executive interviews and promotion panels. The higher the stakes, the harder it becomes to hide behind preparation alone.
Pressure has a way of exposing the gaps.
A leader who speaks calmly in everyday conversations might suddenly start to rush. Their breathing changes. Their volume drops. They begin over-explaining points that were perfectly good in the first place.
The issue is rarely expertise. More often, it is the disconnect between what someone knows and how they communicate it under pressure.
That is why executive presence is less about performance and more about alignment.
Do your words match your thinking? Does your voice reflect your level of authority? Can you stay connected to your message when the room becomes challenging?
These are the questions that matter.
In FTSE, enterprise and professional services environments, people are not just judging the quality of your ideas. They are making judgements about your judgement, your credibility and your ability to lead, and those judgements are often formed long before you have finished speaking.
In a time when AI can create polished words, reports and presentations in seconds, genuine human communication is becoming more valuable, not less.
People still want to know what you think. They still want to trust the person delivering the message.
That trust comes from alignment.
Not performance.
If you are curious about how your communication is currently landing, the Speak Proud Executive Presence Assessment takes just a few minutes and shows where your voice, presence and communication may be helping or hindering your impact as a leader.
